This week, we proudly recognise NAIDOC Week, a time to celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It is also an opportunity for our higher education community to reflect on the role we play in fostering respect, understanding, and cultural awareness.

NAIDOC Week invites us to listen, learn, and engage more deeply with the knowledge systems, leadership, and enduring connection to Country that have shaped this land for tens of thousands of years. For our international student community, this is an important opportunity to build awareness of Australia’s First Nations peoples, their histories, and the significance of culture and Country in contemporary Australia.

We encourage all students to take time during NAIDOC Week to learn, reflect, and engage respectfully—whether by attending events, exploring resources, or having meaningful conversations. Developing cultural awareness is a vital part of studying and living in Australia, helping to foster mutual respect and a more inclusive community.

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we learn and work and pay our respects to Elders past and present. Their wisdom and continuing connection to Country remain central to Australia’s identity.

NAIDOC Week is not only a celebration—it is an invitation for all of us to deepen our understanding and contribute to a more respectful and informed society.
