Some of you may be starting the new year with clear plans, goals, or resolutions already in place. Others may still feel stuck in last year, unsure where to begin, or lacking the energy to plan anything at all.
The good news, both experiences are completely normal.
As we know motivation can come and go, and there are times when it feels low or even absent. You might experience feeling tired, unmotivated, or disconnected but does not mean you are failing or behind. It simply means you are human, and many people experience this at different points in their lives.
You may notice thoughts like “I know I need a change, but I don’t know how” or “I want to feel different, but I don’t have the energy right now.” If this feels familiar, you are not alone.
Guess what, taking the time to read this post is already a small step for yourself. It shows awareness and effort, even if things feel slow at the moment. Remember, progress does not need to be big or immediate.
Anyone can relate, when motivation is low, pushing yourself too hard can lead to guilt or exhaustion. Instead, it can help to slow down and focus on what feels manageable. Below, are reflection questions you can try at home or wherever you are at this moment of time.
What feels most challenging for me right now
What is one small thing I could do today that feels achievable
What usually helps me feel a little more settled or supported
What expectations can I gently lower for now
You might also find it helpful to make a simple plan within your comfort zone. This could be choosing one task to focus on, setting aside a short period for study, or allowing yourself rest without feeling guilty.
Again, small steps still count.
If you would like to talk through how you are feeling or get support with motivation, stress, or adjustment, the Counselling Unit is here to help. You can book a confidential counselling session through Moodle. Please note that sessions are currently available online only.

As the year winds down, many students start feeling tired, stretched, or overwhelmed — especially those balancing work, study, and life responsibilities.
This week, we’re focusing on energy awareness. Understanding what drains your energy and what recharges you is an important step in managing stress and staying grounded. Here are a few prompts to guide your self-check:
What’s draining your energy lately?
Examples may include:
-
Working long hours
-
Too many commitments
-
Messy or cluttered spaces
-
Negative self-talk
-
Lack of sleep
What’s been giving you energy?
You might notice things like:
-
Short breaks or walks
-
Quality time with someone you trust
-
Eating regularly
-
Doing one thing at a time
-
Keeping realistic expectations
Taking a moment to reflect on your personal energy patterns can help you make small, meaningful adjustments in your daily routine.

Dear Students,
Taking just a few minutes each day to reflect on your experiences can significantly improve your wellbeing. Mini reflection journaling is a simple technique that allows you to notice your progress, set intentions, and manage stress.
Try This Daily Reflection:
-
Write one thing you did well today
-
Set one small goal for tomorrow
-
Note something you’re grateful for
Why It Works:
Reflective journaling has been shown to enhance mental wellbeing, engagement, and self-awareness among students (Sudirman et al., 2023).You don’t need to write a lot, even a few lines each day can make a difference. Consider this a small, intentional pause in your busy schedule to recharge and refocus.
